Dowty Propellers’ testing capabilities include a full range of verification means for its propeller products, from the validation of components to the running of fully-assembled propellers.
To support its manufacture of more than 23,000 composite blades to date, Dowty Propellers has extensive in-house testing resources to ensure product quality and integrity. As part of its investments, the company has established an automated non-destructive testing (NDT) suite, and developed predictive methods for blade wear and fatigue.
On-site capabilities at Dowty Propellers’ Gloucester, UK headquarters facility include:
- Blade, cylinder and pitch change fatigue trials, propeller over-speed and functional testing;
- Rotating natural frequency evaluations;
- Vibration and acceleration loads; and
- Tests representing conditions at various temperatures, altitudes and humidity levels.
Through its partnerships, the company also has access to test rigs for bird strike and lightning strike evaluations, while its own flight test engineer teams are available for flight trials on testbed aircraft.
The proof of Dowty Propellers’ testing capabilities is demonstrated by its products’ in-service record. With more than 300 million flying hours logged by the company’s composite blades, no single catastrophic failure has ever been attributed to a Dowty propeller.
